The aptly called ‘Skate Church’ is an old temple located in Llanera (Asturias) that has been transformed by the Church Brigade collective into a pilgrimage destination for skate culture lovers. It was by the end of 2014 that Okuda San Miguel first came to this place and marveled by the spirituality that surrounds it, he visualized the perfect complement for the spirit of the new Skate Church.
Inspired by his iconic Kaos Star, Okuda thought of the place as a Kaos Temple that gathered the sufficient funds through a crowdfunding campaign that offered in exchange a series of rewards specially designed by the artist. With the objective achieved, on november the 23th of 2015 the painting of the church started and it was reopened to the public by december the 10th with the presence of the professional skater Danny León.
Working inside one of the most characteristic structures in the history of art makes this Okuda’s most important project to date. A creative expression that has turned in little time into an example of cultural agitation and promotion of new artistic spaces.
The church remains open to this day, welcoming skaters willing to practice in a unique skatepark, and also contemporary art enthusiasts looking to witness the unique conquest of a classical church by urban art.
