Okuda San Miguel was invited to paint a mural on the outside of clothing brand Desigual’s flagship New York store to mark its reopening. The work pays tribute to multiculturalism, art and color in NYC, a city where every culture finds a home. In Okuda’s imagined version of the city, a colorized Statue of Multiculturalism is depicted holding a copy of Subway Art, Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper’s legendary “bible” of street art. The statue is complemented by the textures, colors, prints, elements of Hindi and Arabic typography, hybrid characters comprising animals and elements of the city that are all woven together by the artist to tell a story about diversity and street art.
